Ways to Rejuvanating Blackpool

Blackpool is a town that is declining since the start of cheap package holidays which would be just as expensive to go to Blackpool as if you wanted to go abroad.

1.Blackpool could rejuvenate itself by making the town and seaside more modern this could be done by sculptures new shops and new attractions on the pier or beach.

2.The town could be kept clean and safe this is simple but very useful as people would want to walk around knowing there safe they could also update there night life to make it modern this would attract younger people to live or stay in the town.

3.There is now a new shopping centre with more modern shops, big brands and and cleaner place to buy and be around the shopping centre will atrract many new people aswell as locals to go back to the town after declining.

sidmouth

sea wall is a wall which stops the waves from getting close to the cliffs if they were allowed to get close they would erode the soft rock quickly making the rocks slump or slide.

Groynes are used to stop long shore drift they put poles in the ground to prevent the sand moving sideways along the beach if knowone had any groynes there would be no sand at the end of one beach and all the sand at the other this would cause tourists numbers to drop and also would mean they would have to import sand or stones to replace the lost sand.

Rocks these are the most natural looking barrier but they erode like normal rock and will erode and will have to be replaced regulary.

cliff

mass movement

mass movement is basically when the rock either slumps, flows, rock fall, slide on the soft rocks you tend to find more slumping or slide because the rock is much softer its is caused to slump by the waves hitting the rock causing wave cut notches which makes the rock slump because of the weight on the wekened rock were the high and low tide have been.

weathearing

This is the type of weather that cause the rock to dissapear you can get bioligical, chemical and others chemical is were rain will hit certain rocks this rain has acid in it and make the rock dissolve this weakens the rock.Bioligical weathering can be bad for rocks by animals making holes in the rocks also roots push.

Erosion

This is caused by four types of erosion hydroulic action, abbrasion, attrition, corrosion the main erosion that breaks down rock the quickeest is hydraulic action this is were the wave crash up against the rocks and causes wave cut notches wich makes the rock slump, rock fall or sliding .

Chalk Cliffs at Cuckmere Haven East Sussex

Mass movement

is the way the rocks move these rocks are the vertical joints on the rock makes it easy to freeze thaw this will cause the rock to weaken and the type of mass movement here would be rock fall. You might also get creep and slide when rocks get saturated with water.

Weathering

This is the break down in the rock there are plants at the top of the cliff that will make the rocks form cracks also the rain will wear away the rocks that is called chemical weathering wind will also damage the surface of the rock and cause it to wear away.As the roots get bigger this will widden cracks in the rock which may lead to rock fall.Animals can also cause breakdown in rocks

Erosion

This could happen by hydrolic power, abrasion, attrition these will damage the rock at high and low tides.Hydrolic power would cause the rock to make a wave cut notch the weight of the rock would make a rock fall   after a while then this would be good for abrasion and attrition also the waves will cause it to dissolve the rocks

Bedzed exam question

TRANSPORT INTO BEDZED

BedZED is accessible from the east side of London Road (A237), opposite New Road, approximately 500 metres north of hackbridge station. Because of BedZED's low-energy-emission concept, cars are discouraged; the project encourages public transport, cycling, and walking, and has limited parking space.

  • DESIGN PRINCIPLES
  • Zero energy—The project is designed to use only energy from renewable sources generated on site. There are 777 m² of solar panels. Tree waste fuels the development's cogeneration plant (downdraft gasifier) to provide district heating and electricity. The gasifier is not being used, because of technical implementation problems, though the technology has been and is being used successfully at other sites.
  • High quality—The apartments are finished to a high standard to attract the urban professional.
  • Energy efficient—The houses face south to take advantage of solar gain, are triple glazed, and have high thermal insulation.
  • Water efficient—Most rain water falling on the site is collected and reused. Appliances are chosen to be water-efficient and use recycled water when possible. A "Living Machine" system of recycling waste water was installed, but is not operating.
  • Low-impact materials—Building materials were selected from renewable or recycled sources within 35 miles of the site, to minimize the energy required for transportation.
  • Waste recycling—Refuse-collection facilities are designed to support recycling.
  • Transport—The development works in partnership with the United Kingdom's leading car-sharing operator, City Car Club. Residents are encouraged to use this environmentally friendly alternative to car ownership; an on-site selection of vehicles is available for use.
  • Encourage eco-friendly transport—Electric and liquefied-petroleum-gas cars have priority over cars that burn petrol and diesel, and electricity is provided in parking spaces for charging electric cars.

The Zabaleen

Who are they?

The Zabaleen are a group of people who are allowed to colllect the cities (cairos) waist the rubbish was given to there animals such as there pigs which  feed them so people didnt have to buy any special food for them which would of cost them money.

Where do they live?

The Zabbaleen live in an area known locally as Garbage City. The Zabaleen in Cairo (an estimated 60,000 - 70,000 in number) are mostly descendants of poor farmers from Upper Egypt who settled in the city in the 1950's

How do they make a living from rubbish?

The Zabbaleen generally performed this service very cheaply or for free, making a living by sorting the waste materials for reuse or recycling. Waste food is fed to livestock (most often pigs) or poultry. Other materials, such as steel, glass and plastic bottles, are sorted by hand and sold as raw materials. Other items are repaired or reused. Some material is burnt as fuel. Traditionally, donkey driven carts are used by males to collect waste from homes, which is sorted by female members of the family in zabbaleen homes. It is claimed that zabbaleen reuse or recycle 80-90% of the waste they collect

In what ways do the Zabaleen offfer a sustainable solution to waste disposal?

What problems do they face?

Many Zabaleen suffer from health problems such as hepatitis, due to the low-tech sorting methods used and general poverty.
